JP Nataf (lead vocal and songwriter of Les Innocents in the 90s) is probably what french music did best in past months (years?). I am now listening his new album Clair for several days and I cannot stop listening to it. The more I listen to it the more I like it & the more I discover the talent. The quality is both on music and on lyrics and easily bring lots of emotions to who pay a little attention to it. Definitely one of the best LP of 2009.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is about to release her new album Antichrist. This time she committed it with Beck and not with Air anymore with whom she released 5:55 in 2007.

Jay-Z, Empire State Of Mind
Shawn Corey Carter a.k.a Jay-Z released his new album The Blueprint 3. And this is always an event for Hip-Hop fans. As usual lots of guests for this new LP : Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Rihanna, Pharell. I already listened to this few times and I really now appreciates the track Empire State of Mind. Dizzee Rascal, Dance Wiv Me
Dizzee Rascal is an english hip-hop artist who's used to mix several musical genres. The single Dance Wiv Me is performed with Chromeo and Calvin Harris, both electro artists. He is regularly winning some awards for his creations (already NME awards, Mercury prize...).
He released a new album in 2009 Tongue'n'Check. And I really like this track so I wanted to share it. I recommand the artist and am now running to discover the rest of his album ;)

Fashionista music
Last week was fashion week in Paris. During this week I noticed the close link which is existing between fashion and music stars. Lots of music artists are coming to fashion show but even more : artists are sharing their image with brands. for instance Lily Allen played live during Chanel show.
I also noticed Lacroix worked with La Roux the new electro revelation - they gave an interview to LesInrocks.
Is this a new phenomenon? I don't think so as this already happened in the past. One of the most famous couple is probably Madonna and Jean Paul Gautier in the early 90s. JPG did clothes for Madonna tour named Like A Prayer.
This is clearly good value for the singers to be associated to such brands. Give them usually some kind of credibility (who would think Lily Allen would have been Chanel's egerie?). But maybe the biggest benefit is for brands which are always looking to be fancy, in and the closest to youth.

Housse De Racket, Oh Yeah
Ok Housse de Racket looks like an other new band for teenagers. They are two young french guys playing rock which sounds like english rock. But the difference here is that they do rock, sing in french and assume totally. They also add a big part of irony in their lyrics. And the result is really nice.
They released their first album Forty Love which mixes rock and electro sounds. Their influence? Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder &... Daft Punk !

Nancy Sinatra is the daughter of the famous Frank Sinatra. She is known as singer but also as an actress. She is signed some famous tracks like These Boots are made for Walking or Bang Bang. She used to perform a theme from a James Bond movie You Only Live Twice.
She knew few years ago a revival as Bang Bang was chosen by Quentin Tarantino as the hit for Kill Bill. She also did appear as herself in the serie The Sopranos.

Get Well Soon is a project led by the German singer & songwriter Konstantin Gropper. They produced their first album Rest Now, Weary Head! You Will Get Well Soon last year.
I really like the music added to his specific voice. This creates a romantic rock music. Guitars, drums, violins, trumpet, piano are mixed there. The video for the single Rest Now, Weary Head! You Will Get Well Soon is a good example of the feeling this music reveals. If you already appreciate The Divine Comedy, Radiohead or Arcade Fire you'll love it.
Tuesday Artist Review : Toots & The Maytals
This is the second rendez-vous of Tuesday Artist Review ! (see first one)
I recently watched the english movie This Is England. I liked this as the story is well writen and shot. It explains the evolution of a tribe of skinheads during the beginning of the 80's while leaving in England was not that fun (Thatcher, Farklands war...). The movie is cool, the soundtrack is great and full of Toots & the Maytals.
So this week artist review is about : Toots & the Maytals
The Maytals are made of Frederick "Toots" Hibbert, Nathaniel "Jerry" Matthias and Raleigh Gordon. The band has been created in the early 60s and is strongly influenced by ska and soul. They are all coming from Kingston and they claim they were the first to use the term Reggae in the song Do the Reggay.
They are considered as the most famous reggae band. Even more since they leader Hibbert was emprisonned in 66 for smoking ganja. Their music became more reggae (more aggressive than ska) when he was released from prison 18 months later. They release then an album including the track 54-46 That's My Number which was a big hit and a reference to hibbert prison number and Pressure Drop. The band broke up in 1981, Hibbert recreated the band with new Maytals in the 90s. Read more here.

Ok i'm late. Sliimy is a phenomenon for weeks. But till today I did not listen intentionally to the music of this young man. So I removed my a priori on this fluo-color-dressed guy and listened to his first album Paint Your Face. And it's a good surprise for me. The music is well produced to fit with his specific voice. And I really like the video for Trust Me. Always good to be surprised !

I really appreciate their light pop-rock music as the music is really well composed and performed. Their singer is a real rock star !
I also like them as they realize good live performance. I had the chance to see them at La fête de la Musique 06 in Paris and last year in a festival in Paris.

As this is summer time in Paris I begin with Seu Jorge.
Seu Jorge is a brazilian musician & songwriter. He already released 4 albums : Samba Esporte Fino (2001), Cru (2004), The Life Aquatic (2005) & America Brasil (2007). He received critical and popular acclaim with Cru. He also did play in movies among City of God, The Life Aquatic... For Life Aquatic (from Wes Anderson) he did the soundtracks as well based on portuguese covers of David Bowie songs.
